Victory Obelisk

Tver, pl. Victory

The Obelisk is located on the left bank of the T’maka River where it inflows into the Volga. The Obelisk was opened on December 16, 1970 in honor of the city's liberation from German fascists. Kalinin (former city’s name in Soviet time) has become the first regional center liberated from the invaders. The square with a 50 m height Obelisk crowned with the bronze bowl is located in the center of architectural complex. The flame is ignited in the bowl on May 9, City’s Day and on December 16. Four 4x6 m shields with raised inscriptions "Glory to the heroes", "Everything for the front," "Everything for victory" and "Salute" are mounted 4 m from the Obelisk pedestal. It’s notable that the fireworks are arranged on May 9 near the Obelisk. The Eternal Flame is burning and a metronome is simulating the heart beating below the Obelisk level, where the granite steps lead to. A capsule with a letter to the descendants, which should be opened in 2045 in the centenary anniversary of the victory over German fascist invaders, is hidden near the Obelisk. A memorial complex dedicated to the memory of people killed in "hot spots" has been opened not far from the Victory Obelisk in 2006. The authors of Monument to Soldiers Internationalists are the sculptor A. Psheratsky and architect B. Makarov. Names of 255 soldiers and officers are carved on the granite slabs. There is a globe model showing all places where the soldiers - natives of Tver region fought in the Memorial center.
